The words and illustrations in Grandpa Can were inspired by the relationship between Dawn’s dad and his grandchildren. Dawn’s daughter often wrote lists with Grandpa of the fun things they planned to do together. Sometimes they fed worms and squirrels. Sometimes they simply snuggled. His illness caused a lot of changes, but their bond was always evident. Dawn used photographs of them to draw and paint the illustrations.
Part of the Brave Little Hearts Series®, which honors the everyday courage of children as they face life’s joys, questions, and challenges.
