Grandpa Can

“Grandpa, you are my best friend. Please don’t ever let that end.”

Ana’s heart breaks when she learns that Grandpa is sick. There are changes, but the two of them discover new adventures. Join Ana and Grandpa on a journey filled with love, hope, and the beauty of creating cherished memories.

Featuring playful couplets and watercolor illustrations, this heartwarming picture book celebrates the special bond between a grandparent and grandchild. Little ones will delight in this sweet story of Grandpa and Ana’s adventures, while all ages will appreciate the loving and truthful message.

Written and illustrated by author, artist, teacher, and mom, Dawn Marie Hooks, Grandpa Can will inspire readers to cherish their loved ones and make the most of every moment. Author notes at the end of the book include helpful suggestions for talking to children about aging, sickness, or loss.

The words and illustrations in Grandpa Can were inspired by the relationship between Dawn’s dad and his grandchildren. Dawn’s daughter often wrote lists with Grandpa of the fun things they planned to do together. Sometimes they fed worms and squirrels. Sometimes they simply snuggled. His illness caused a lot of changes, but their bond was always evident. Dawn used photographs of them to draw and paint the illustrations.

Part of the Brave Little Hearts Series, which honors the everyday courage of children as they face life’s joys, questions, and challenges.
